Al was born to Allan W. and Betty J. Carlson (Haas), and later came little sister, Lynda. Al grew up in Colorado and moved to McCook, NE at the age of 9. Al cherished growing up in McCook and enjoyed his Nebraskan childhood. Al and Annie met in McCook and married September 16th, 1978. Her sisters would still say that the best thing to ever happen to Al was Annie.
Al and Annie welcomed three boys, Luke, Matthew, and Samuel (Sam) in McCook before relocating to Colorado in 1989, which held unrivalled space is in his heart. They would later welcome daughter Katherine (Katie Belle). Al never missed an opportunity to boast about his kids, and later grandkids. His proudest positions on earth were Husband, Dad and Grandpa.
Alan never failed at waking up (not only himself, but the entire house) early for his vocation at BNSF Railway. He dedicated 43 years to the railroad, primarily as a welder and grinder/operator in District 400. Many peers described Al as a hard worker, pleasure to talk to, and an overall great man remembered by his humor on the tracks.
Al loved hunting, fishing, shooting and his music. You could always find him on a river or at the lake, at the gun range, or in his garage jamming to Sammy Hagar and Van Halen, among others. There were countless amounts of YouTube links sent (often daily) of his current muse to his family and friends. He loved his movies, especially Tombstone. He was the best “guess the movie quote” participant, without contest because it was mainly in competition with himself.
There are many attributes that will be missed. His laugh made you laugh. It was contagious. His hugs
were always awkward with cast-iron grit, but they were consistent. Nobody could bypass his smile without smiling themselves. His often poorly timed, offensive jokes were always to be expected with terrible execution. Him and Annie had spent the last several years basking in friendly banter, and you wouldn’t expect any less.
Alan is survived by his wife, Anna L. Carlson (O’Neil), sons Luke Carlson (Jenny Mishler), Matthew (Kris) Carlson, Samuel (Josephine) Carlson, and daughter Katie Belle (Brandon Freed) Carlson. He had seven amazing grandchildren: Bailey, Wyatt, Addy, Mckennly, Levi, Bronson, Declan with two twin Carlson boys on the way. Sister Lynda (Rick) Unger, nieces Alexis Unger and Alana (Austin) Fredrickson, and great nephew and niece Rylan and Sadie. Countless in-laws and second cousins and a plethora of dear friends.
In the famous words of Alan Carlson, “I’m not going anywhere but I’ll be right back.”
