Bill was born on September 27, 1923 in Poquoson, York County, Virginia. He was the son of William Jennings Cox and Zola Topping. His parents preceded him in death.
Upon graduating from Poquoson High School in 1941, he enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II and was proud of serving his country. He graduated from Union College in Barbourville, Kentucky in 1946 with honors and later received a Masters Degree in Education from the University of Louisville.
He served as a teacher and principal in the Pineville City Schools prior to moving to Louisville to become Regional Administrator, Department of Education, Rehabilitation Services in 1962. He later became state-wide Director of Rehabilitation Services in Frankfort, Kentucky until his retirement in 1978. He then became Director of Special Student Services at the University of Louisville. He taught graduate education courses and genuinely loved the interaction with students in both the social and university setting.
He was honored to be named a Kentucky Colonel. Bill was a member of Lyndon Baptist Church for 56 years. He was a deacon and taught The Mens Fellowship Class for more than
50 years. He had an unwavering love for his God, country, family and friends. He was a man of extraordinary integrity and honesty.
Bill shared many interests especially sports as a participant and for enjoyment in watching his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren’s participation. He developed life-long friendships with tennis buddies and bird-dog field trial participants throughout the state. He officiated high school football and basketball games for many years. He was an avid gardener who never forgot his farm roots and the lessons it taught. He enjoyed sharing the garden produce with his family, church members, neighbors and friends.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 70 years, D.J., his children Bill Cox (Dale), Sally Compton (Bill), Russ Cox (Kathy) and his brother, Keith Cox. He also is survived by seven grandchildren, Julie, Amy, Allison, Russ Jr., Susan, Christian, Will, 8 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. His family held a special place in his heart.
Visitation will be at 11:00 am on Tuesday, May 29th at Lyndon Baptist Church, 8025 New LaGrange Road, Louisville, Kentucky followed by a memorial service in celebration of his life at noon.
