He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Barbara of Louisville; a son, Thomas Osting, Jr. (Heather) of Louisville; and a daughter, Kerry Holt (Darren) of Georgetown, Ky. He was Pop Pop to his four grandchildren: Jackson and Samantha Osting, and Wesley and Charlie Holt.
Tom is also survived by one brother, Gerald L. Keyes, Sr. (Cathy); sisters, Martha Keating (Joe), Deborah Haynes (Bob), and Paula Fleitz; as well as sisters-in-law, Susan Osting, Karen Osting and Vickie Osting. He was also blessed with more than a dozen nieces and nephews.
Tom was a NASCAR enthusiast before NASCAR was cool. He spent many hours watching cars turn left with his best friend, Leonard Blanchard. A Ford enthusiast for 90 percent of his life, Tom made a valiant attempt at rooting for Toyota as a shoutout to his daughter’s employer. Tom also enjoyed traveling and following Kentucky Wildcats tournament games with his frequent travel partners, Joe and Dottie Ledington. He will forever bleed blue. Tom never met a cheeseburger he didn’t agree with, nor a candy bar that was not calling his name. His hobbies included wood working, tinkering on cars, reading the newspaper on his deck and meticulously caring for his lawn. His fondest memories were made on his riding lawn mower. Tom’s best pal was his dog, Katie. She brought him much joy, and she is surely at his feet now in Heaven.
To know Tom was to encounter his smile and a handshake. This served him well during his professional career. He was manager of Wish’s Drugs, a private business owner and then spent his retirement years working for Walmart, where he was the unofficial mayor of the lawn and garden department.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin Sr. and Elona Osting; his niece, Cheryl Lynn Osting Moore; and his brothers, Melvin L. Osting, Jr., Frank Osting, Kevin Osting, Wayne Osting, Dennis Osting and Steve Osting; and his sister, Kathy Osting.
A visitation will be held for Tom on Friday, April 18, at Arch L. Heady Resthaven in Louisville from 11 to 2 p.m. with a celebration of life service at 2 p.m. Tom will be laid to rest at Resthaven Memorial Park during a private service.
Donations in Tom’s honor can be made to Hosparus of Louisville or the Kentucky Humane Society.
