Thelma Jean Clemons, age 92, of Louisville, Kentucky passed away on Monday, June 20, 2022. Thelma Jean was born June 28, 1929, to the late George McCravy Sr., and Laura Collins McCravy.
Mrs. Clemons received her Associates Degree in Elementary Education and her Teachers Certificate from Morristown Junior College in Morristown, TN.
She was a retired Unit Supervisor of Radiology at Humana Hospital University and the Radiology Office Manager for Suburban Hospital.
Mrs. Clemons was elected President of the Louisville Urban League Guild in 1970, where she served in that position for three years. She also served as president of the Rennaissance Development Corporation and the Derbytownettes International Toastmistress Club. Thelma Jean had the honor of being appointed to the Louisville Ethics Commission by Mayors Jerry Abramson and Greg Fischer. She was also the recipient of the Louisville Defender Newspapers 2012 Lifetime Community Service Award. In 1975, Mrs Clemons, was appointed by the late Louisville Urban League CEO, Arthur M. Walters, as the first female Chairwoman of the Louisville Urban League Board of Directors. Under the leadership of National Urban League President, Vernon Eulion Jordan Jr., she was the first female board chair of an Urban League affiliate in the national movement.
Mrs. Clemons is preceded in death by her husband, Aaron W. Clemons; siblings, Jane McCravy-Buntin, Clay McCravey, George McCravy Jr. and step-brother William Harold McCravy.
Left to cherish her memory are her siblings, Kathy and Anna McCravy, Edward McCravey and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held Monday, 2:00 pm, at Evergreen Funeral Home. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Sunday from 2:00 pm until 5:00 pm and after 12:00 pm on Monday until the time of the service.
The family would like to request that in lieu of flowers memorial donations in Thelma Jean's name be directed to The Urban League Guild of Louisville.
