He was a Master Chief in the Sea Bee division of the US Navy for 20 years during the Vietnam era. Red was also a heavy equipment operator and demolition specialist. He was a dedicated father and loving grandfather. Mr. Sermon was an avid hunter, gun collector and member of the NRA.
Mr. Sermon was preceded in rest by his wife, Lillian; three sons, James, Charles and Patrick Moreland; a grandson, Jarron Moreland; and three siblings, Dollie Burt, Helen Allen and William Sermon.
He is survived by three daughters-in-law, Mayla Moreland, Pamela Moreland-Haviland and Sandra Moreland; 13 grandchildren, Sonnet Swain Hullinger, James Moreland II, Angela Neuman, Sharie French, Mayla L. Vogel, Shanon Moreland, Charles Moreland, Jr., Shelonda Darling, Summer Slaughter, Andrew Haviland, Krystal Haviland, Anecia Moreland and Lance Moreland; 29 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren; a brother, George Sermon.
His funeral service will be on Wednesday, September 20, 2023, at 12:30pm at the Heady-Hardy Funeral Home, 7710 Dixie Highway, with entombment following in Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 3pm until 8pm.
