A graduate of Butler High School, Ray enlisted in the US Air Force and served during the Vietnam War earning both a National Defense Service Medal and a Vietnam Service Medal. After the Air Force, Ray served on the Louisville Police Department for 31 years earning the rank of Lieutenant and graduating from the Southern Police Institute at UofL. Ray was a dedicated officer and a serving leader to the community, FOP, and LPOA.
The world is a better place for having him in it and he will be missed. Ray had a passion for classic cars and loved restoring them. Loved and loving, he leaves a beautiful family and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Conrad & Lorena Cary and brothers Donald and Norbert Cary. Survivors include his cherished wife Cheryl Stilts Cary; sons Steven Cary, Dr. Adam Cary, and Christopher Stilts; 6 grandchildren and 1 great grandson; brother, Doug Cary; and sisters Barbie Winn, Connie Burkhead, and Lois Ham.
His funeral service will be held at 12:00 Saturday at Heady-Hardy Funeral Home, 7710 Dixie Hwy, followed by entombment at Louisville Memorial Gardens West. Visitation will be from 11 am – 8 pm Friday and 10 am- 12 pm Saturday.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to the WHAS Crusade for Children or Veterans of Wars are appreciated.
