Nancy Newton, 70, of Columbia, passed away peacefully surrounded by her brother and sisters on October 29, 2012 at the University of Louisville Hospital. She was born on January 27, 1942 in Hurst-Bush, Illinois to the late Curtis and Vera Perry Newton. She was a educator in the Columbia School system for over 40 years teaching second grade. She received her Bachelors Degree from SIU in 1964 and received her Masters Degree from SIUE in 1999. She was a member of the IEA and NEA.
Nancy loved working with young authors doing educational workshops and working with gifted students in and around Columbia and Belleville. She was selected “Teacher of the Year” by the Jaycees in 1972 as well as receiving other educational awards throughout her teaching career.
In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by a brother, Sam Newton.
She is survived by her brother, Thomas Leroy (Donna) Newton; sisters, Sharon Reichert (Terry) and Kimberley (Bob) Smyser; sister-in-law, Carol Newton; nieces and nephews, Valerie Vandello, Andrea Raffaele, Earl Newton, Jason Reichert, Ryan Reichert, Tiffany Lundholm, and Shawn Smyser; and several great-nieces and nephews, Carson, Sam, Hayden, Callaway, Jaxon, Zachary, Josie, Sylvie and Luke.
A celebration of her life will be conducted at 2 pm on Saturday at Lawlor Funeral Home, 218 South Metter, Columbia, Il with visitation beginning at 1.
