She was born, Mathilde Louise Rost on October 22, 1909 to the late Frederick Louis Rost and Louise “ Lula May” Eicholtz Rost in Louisville. She was the last surviving grandchild of Anton Frederick Rost and Frances (Fanny) Elizabeth (Kohler) Rost who came to Louisville in 1867 from Hessen / Nassau (Germany) following the 1866 Austro / Prussian War.
Matilda attended Theodore Ahrens Trade High School and later worked along with her three older sisters, as a Telephone Operator. During WWII, The Korean Conflict, Vietnam War and The Cold War years, she worked in U.S. Military Defense Industries in both Kentucky and Indiana. She was a volunteer at the Marine Hospital in Portland, and was active in P.T.A. and a long time member of the Louisville Safety Council. She was a life long member of the old St. Peter’s Evangelical Church (United Church of Christ), loved children, and worked in child care in her later years.
She was the beloved and devoted wife of Robert Bruce Rush, US Army Corps of Engineers, and mother of first son, Robert Boyd Rush, both of whom preceded her in death.
Left to treasure and cherish her memory are her son, Bruce Warren Rush, Sr. (Maria Araceli), grandsons; Bruce Warren Rush, Jr. (US Army-West Point) and Douglas Mckinsey Rush (US Army- Virginia Military Institute), plus a host of nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.
The family would like to express their sincere and special thanks to her nurses, doctors, caregivers, and residents at Twinbrook, for their loving and dedicated care.
Her favorite charities in Louisville were Cedar Lake Lodge, Vietnam Veterans of America, and her church.
Friends and family may visit Thursday, 2-7 pm on March 14th, and after 11 am Friday
A celebration of her life will be held at Arch L. Heady-Cralle Funeral Home, 2428 Frankfort Avenue at Noon on Friday, March 15th, with interment at Cave Hill.
