Libby Weatherby Hoard passed away peacefully on Monday, April 15 with loved ones by her side. Born Mary Elizabeth Raeuchle on July 12, 1935, to Arthur and Mary (Swindler) Raeuchle, she was very proud to say she grew up in the Germantown neighborhood of Louisville, Ky. Libby graduated from Atherton High School in 1953. She earned her bachelor’s degree in sociology and social work from the University of Louisville, the same college where she graduated from the Kent School with a Master of Science in Social Work.
In her 88 years on Earth, Libby loved life as much as she loved people. She lived for her family and through her strong faith. She exemplified the meaning of unconditional love. Libby’s fiery spirit, giving nature, and laughter are what we will remember most. She absolutely loved making others feel special, especially on their birthdays and for Christmas, one of her favorite holidays.
Libby had a long and successful career in the treatment of drug and alcohol abuse. Her roles included being a counselor at various facilities; coordinator of the Salvation Army’s Comprehensive Alcoholism Program; and director of public relations, consultation, and education at Brooklawn Treatment Center before becoming the director of outpatient services at Brooklawn. She also served as president of the Alcoholism Council of Louisville. Libby truly had a passion for helping people in recovery find a purposeful life.
In Libby’s own words, her advice is “live life to grow and learn.”
Libby was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Barbara, and her beloved husband, Jim Hoard. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Kim Strange (Doc); sons Lance Weatherby (Abby) and Britt Weatherby (Sue); grandchildren Chris White (Ashley), Kate and Jack Weatherby, and J.D., Kathleen, and Cory Speicher; great-grandchildren Desirae Speicher and Travis, Eric, and Anna White along with many nieces and nephews.
A service to celebrate Libby’s life will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, April 23, 2024 in the Chapel of Arch L. Heady & Son at Westport Village, 7410 Westport Rd. Visitation will be held from 4-8 PM on Monday, April 22 and also from 10:00AM until the time of the service on Tuesday at the funeral home. Libby will be reunited with the love of her life, Jim Hoard, at Calvary Cemetery.
