The family attended Jeffersontown Methodist Church. Mary attended Fern Creek Elementary and High School. When she graduated in 1954, she received a four year scholarship to Ursuline College. Throughout her college career she played as an organist at Newburg Christian Church. This opportunity enabled her to train for the career she wanted to fulfil as a teacher, as she majored in Mathematics and Chemistry.
Upon her graduation from Ursuline College in 1958, she was assigned a teaching position in Mathematics at Eastern High School in Middletown, KY. Two years later she transferred to Westport High School (A new high school being opened). Mary taught at Westport High until December of 1967, when she was offered a position to teach Mathematics at Jefferson Community College, one of UK’s Community Colleges which was being opened in Louisville, KY. Mary retired in June of 1997, throughout her career she received numerous awards including the UK Great Teacher Award of which she was really proud.
Before starting her career at Jefferson Community College she married Ford Fletcher on June 18, 1966. They attended Evangel until 1980 and then started to church at Deer Park Baptist Church. After Ford passed away in 1976, Mary never remarried and sold her home in 1982. Mrs. Fletcher did not enjoy living in an apartment so she bought her home on Tyler Lane in 1984 and her friend Anna Roberts moved in with her. Once Anna passed in June of 2001, Mary was living on her own again.
After her retirement, Mary started doing volunteer work regularly at Suburban Hospital and the American Diabetes Association and various other places from time to time putting in up to fifty hours a week.
