Mary Catherine Highfill Baxter, 94, of Louisville passed quietly from this world on March 3, 2024. She was born into humble beginnings on January 7, 1930, near her family homestead in The Point neighborhood of Louisville.
She was the oldest of five children. Determined to have a better life than what she knew, she overcame many challenges and obstacles to become a self-sufficient independent woman. She was a hard worker who retired as an Environmental Services supervisor at Marion Hall on the Ursuline Campus. She became friends with many of the Ursuline sisters and would go on trips with them. She also was a kind, caring person whose door was always open to everyone. She was always there for anyone in need. Her favorite past time was working in her yard and tending to everything she had planted – a trait she passed along to many generations. Most importantly she was a proud mother, grandmother, great and great-great grandmother and many happy memories were created while celebrating events with her. Overall, she lived life on her own terms and made no excuses.
Mary Catherine is now at rest with those who passed before her and include her parents, Raymond and Emma Rehla Highfill and all of her siblings: Emma Harris, Raymond Highfill Jr, Shirley Gideons and Carolyn Whallen.
Tragically, she suffered the passing of all three of her children: Mary Louise Durham (Donald), Loretta Ann DeVasier (James) and Michael S. Baxter (Pamela), as well as the passing of her grandson, Zoller (Doug) Tapp.
Left to keep her memory alive are her four granddaughters: Veronica Durham Richardson (Adam), Katrina Durham Tarter (John David), Christie Baxter Storck and Stephany Baxter (Larry); six great grandchildren: Danielle Durham Sherrard (Dain), Kayla Baxter, Christian Baxter, Isabella, Angelina and Kyron Coviello and two great-great grandchildren: Delilah and Dillan Sherrard.
Funeral service will be held on Wednesday March 20, 2024 at Saint Joseph Catholic Church 1406 E Washington St. Louisville, KY 40206 at 11am in Butchertown where she was a member since 1930. Following mass a graveside service will be held at Memorial Gardens East 11601 Ballardsville Rd. Louisville, KY 40241
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy can be made to the Kentucky Humane Society in her name.
