Marie B. Miller, 95, has placed her last daily double wager and crossed the finish line on October 2, 2013 following a brief illness. She was born in Smiths Grove, Kentucky on August 27, 1918 according to her birth certificate, although her mother always maintained that the birth did not occur until the following day, the doctor had been drinking too much and recorded the wrong date. This might help explain her life-long enjoyment of a good glass of champagne and her wonderful sense of humor.
She and her family moved to Louisville during the depression and in 1946 she married attorney William A. Miller who predeceased her in 2001. Throughout their marriage they enjoyed traveling a great deal and their varied journeys took them around the world visiting many countries. They also particularly enjoyed thoroughbred racing events, especially at Churchill Downs and Marie continued rooting for her horses well after Bill’s death.
She is survived by her two sons, William A. Miller, Jr. (Debby) of Louisville, Dr. Gregory B. Miller (Dr. Susan Smith) of Charleston S.C. and by her granddaughter Sloane, also of Charleston, S. C.
The family wishes to extend grateful thanks to the healthcare staff of the Forum at Brookside for their extraordinary kind attention to Marie during the last years of her life. She was very happy there. Special thanks are also extended to Dr. William H. Haney for his medical care and concern for Marie both at the Forum and during her final weeks.
Visitation will be on Friday, October 18 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Arch L. Heady at Resthaven, 4400 Bardstown Road, Louisville Kentucky, with graveside service to be held Saturday, 2p.m. October 19, at Resthaven Memorial Park.
