Born on Sunday, March 25, 1934 in Loretto, Kentucky Joe was the son of the lates’ Joseph Dohler Cissell & Mary Effie Thomas. A man of many career endeavors, Joe served as a Patrolman in the Patrol Division of the Jefferson County Police Department for over 27 years. He also was an electrical contractor, owning his own business, Cissell Electric. He was a Charter Member of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 14, which became River City F.O.P. 614 after the Jefferson County / Louisville Metro Merger. In the mid 1980’s Joe also opened and operated Joe’s Place, a restaurant and bar offering “home cooking” & “Beer on Tap”, the establishment is open today operating as Holly’s Pour House. Joe had one true hobby and that was his music. He loved to listen to and record hits, amassing a large collection of cassettes and C.D.’s that he had cataloged over the years. Joe was an Honorable Kentucky Colonel as well as a former trustee for over 12 years with the Okolona Fire District. Above all, Joe loved his family. Joe lived a full life! A life – well – lived!
Besides his parents, Joseph Dohler & Mary Effie Cissell; his wife of 61 years, Helen Marine Cissell; children, Ricky Cissell & Billie Jayne “BJ” Price; a heavenly granddaughter, Michelle Brey; brother, Pat Cissell; & sisters, Linda Brewster, Rose, & Gerri precede Joe in his passing.
Left to cherish his memory are his children, Bruce (Gina) Cissell & Jeff (Diana) Cissell; 8 – grandchildren, Daniel Ray, Eric Reinstedler, Nicky (Eddie) Sams, Melissa (Michael) Pfanmoeller, Courtney (Jeff) Beck, Brent (Tonya) Brey, Ashley (Lee) Kirkpatrick and April (Michael) Janok; 14 – great – grandchildren; 3 – great – great – grandchildren; brothers, Tony Cissell & Jim Cissell; his special friend, Jo Anne Greene; several nieces and nephews; plus, a host of other relatives and friends to mourn his passing.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday, October 7, 2024 at 12:00 p.m. in the Heady Memorial Chapel of the Arch L. Heady & Son Funeral Home – Okolona Home. Joe will be laid to rest in the Chapel of Apostles of Evergreen Cemetery & Garden Mausoleums with Police Department Honors, where he will rest for eternity alongside his wife, Helen. Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 6, 2024 from 11:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. with a Memorial Service at 7:00 p.m. conducted by the River City F.O.P. honoring Joe and his service to the citizens of Louisville and Jefferson County at Arch L. Heady & Son Funeral Home - Okolona Chapel. Visitation will be held again on Monday, October 7, 2024 from 10:00 a.m. until the Funeral Hour of 12:00 p.m. also at the Arch L. Heady & Son Funeral Home – Okolona Home.
