John Mark Petry, of Louisville passed on to his life with the Lord on Saturday, December 17th, 2016 in a tragic car accident on I-71. He was born in Louisville on January 27th, 1957. A Louisville native, he graduated from Atherton High School in 1975 and the University of Louisville in 1987. After he graduated, he loved following Louisville sports and would readily discuss recent games with other U of L fans. A lifelong swimmer and a competitive swimmer in high school, he enjoyed swimming with the Louisville Masters as an adult.
He was a longtime employee of Kroger, and spoke fondly of working there. He considered his coworkers there to be an extension of his family, and always had a twinkle in his eye when anyone would share a recipe that had been put together with ingredients exclusively from his own Kroger store.
He is survived by his stepmother, Judy Petry, sister Marcia Petry Benninger (Tom), brother Cory Petry (Jen), and his nephews Ethan (Renzia), Wesley (Laura), and Sam Benninger, and Leif Petry, and his nieces, Suzanne Benninger and June Petry, and his great niece Ellie Benninger and great nephew Ian Benninger. His nieces and nephews have fond memories of his kind nature, his goofy sense of humor and his introducing them to “Buddy-Pals". He also leaves behind his beloved companion and best friend, golden retriever Josh, who already misses him dearly. In addition he is missed by many friends and loved ones from his church. His fellowship with them reminds us that for him, “Only one life will soon be past, only what’s done for Christ will last.”
Visitation will be held at Arch L. Heady & Son at Westport Village, 7410 Westport Rd. on Wednesday, December 20th from 4-8 PM. Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday at the funeral home.
Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Kentucky Humane Society, and to Golden Retriever Rescue and Adoption of Needy Dogs.
