John David Mitchell

He leaves the love of his life for 64 years, Dorothy (Maier) Mitchell; his beloved children, Dr. Alice A. Mitchell, Greenbelt, MD; Dr. Carol L. Mitchell, Lexington, KY; and Mark F. Mitchell (Lorey), Palm Beach Gardens, FL; grandchildren Nick, Chris, and Andrea George; and step-grandchildren Jenny and C.J. Reese; David and Chris Lappert. In addition, he leaves behind many close friends, especially the Alohas, Elaine and Karen, special neighbors Liz and Art, and fellow residents and staff at Wesley Village.

Born in Dunellen, NJ, the son of Leonora and Stanley Misiewicz, he moved to Louisville, KY in 1968, and to Wesley Village, Wilmore, KY in 2016. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Veronica Vincent and Frances Watkins, and broter Frank Misiewicz.

Entering military service in 1943, he was a Sergeant with Gen. George Patton's 3rd Army, 34th Signal Construction Battalion Landing on Utah Beach, Normandy, France several days after D-Day, he fought throughout Europe. When the war in Europe ended, his unit was deployed to the Pacific, eventually becoming part of the occupation forces in Japan.

He married Dorothy November 22, 1952. They lived and raised their family in Green Brook, NJ until their move to Kentucky in 1968.

John was a photoengraver employed by Art Color Printing Company in Dunellen, NJ, then Southern Gravure Services, Inc. in Louisville, KY, returing in 1988. He was a member of St. Leonard Church and a Kentucky Colonel.

Having an empathy for others, John volunteered with Habitat for Humanity for 20 years. He enjoyed his free time golfing with friends, oil painting, and working in his yard.

The family wishes to thank all the caring staff members of Wesley Village, and the medical professionals who provided his care over the years.

A memorial service will be held at Wesley Village in Wilmore, KY at a later date as well as a private interment in Hillside Cemetery, Scotch Plains, NJ.
