Dr. John G. "Gil" Esterle

He was born August 5, 1933 in Louisville, the son of the late John Louis and Christine Margarete (Bartsch) Esterle. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Martha Carole (Becker) Esterle; two children, Gerard and Sarah Ellen; and three siblings, Mary Agnes Fleitz, Clara Fuqua and Ann Mertz.

Gil received his Bachelor’s degree from Bellarmine University and Doctorate degree from The University of Louisville. He spent his career in Research and Development at Brown & Williamson, where he earned several patents for his work.

In addition to spending time with his family, Gil also enjoyed cooking, reading, crossword puzzles and playing poker. Other than his family, his greatest joy came from beating everyone at the family’s Saturday night domino game.

Left to cherish his memory are his four sons, Josh Esterle (Lori), Ben Esterle (Mary), Matt Esterle (Paula), Joe Esterle (Judy); eight grandchildren; and fifteen great-grandchildren.

Guests are invited to a memorial reception in Gil’s honor from 1-4 PM on Sunday, April 23, 2023 at Arch L. Heady & Son at Westport Village, 7410 Westport Rd. Private burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery.
