John was born in Nashville, June 25, 1919, and lived on Morton St. until age 4. He is named after his Grandfather. They then moved down the street to 508 Morton St. and grew up there. The house belonged to Josie Bowers his grandmother. Uncle Dick Bowers and Aunt Grace Bowers also lived there. He was Valedictorian at Central High School in Nashville, TN. He got his first car at age 15, while a sophomore in High School. It was a 1929 Model A Ford. During this time he worked at his Father’s gas station at 4th & Oak in Nashville, TN. He went to Lipscomb College from 1938-1940 and graduated with a 2-year degree. He then obtained his B.S. in Electrical Engineering at Vanderbilt University after 3 years. Brother E. H. Ijams married John and Elizabeth on March 26, 1943.
They lived in Charleston, South Carolina from March 1943 until October 1945 during WW II. In January 1945, they moved to an apartment at 212 Dewey Street in Pittsburgh, PA. They bought their first house in 1948, at 10528 Lindberg Ave. in Pittsburg, PA. They went to church at the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Church of Christ at Oakland. He electrically wired the new church building at Fifth and Beechwood Church of Christ. He received his Masters in Electrical Engineering at University of Pittsburgh. In 1955, they had a daughter named Nancy Jo, but she only lived three days. Beth was born January 1958 at McGee Hospital in Pittsburg, PA. They moved to 613 East Side Drive, Bloomington, Indiana in 1958 and lived there until 1990. He was the Electrical Engineering Manager at Westinghouse. Peggy was born on Christmas day 1960.
They attended North Central Church of Christ and he was an elder for 16 years. He retired in 1984 from Westinghouse after 38 years. They moved to Louisville in 1990. They attended Westport Road Church of Christ. He served as a Deacon in charge on building maintenance for several years. They celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary March 26, 2010.
His parents, Willie Mae Bowers Brittain and Bargro Newsom Brittain of Nashville, TN; his wife, Elizabeth Brittain of Louisville, KY; and a daughter, Nancy Jo Brittain of Pittsburgh, PA preceded him in death.
Mr. Brittain is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Beth and Monte Tatom of Henderson, TN, and Peggy and Randy Noblitt of Louisville, KY; four grandchildren, Rachael Tatom, Jordan Tatom (Sarah), Bryce Noblitt (Mary Beth) and Lauren Noblitt; two great grandchildren, Jonathan and Jordyn Tatom; two brother-in-laws and their wives, Clifton Trimble (Louise) and Tom Trimble (Glenna); several cousins, nieces, nephews, and many friends.
