He was retired sales executive, a member of South East Christian Church, American Legion Hardin Post 113, Masonic Lodge, and Scottish Rite and he was also a Shriner. He served his country as a lieutenant commander during World War II in the U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Marines.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters; and a brother.
He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Lee Sullivan Nelson; children, James Nelson Jr. (Jan), Rebecca Heim (Corky), Susan Watson (M.C.), Sharon Butts (Bill), Janet Clifford (Denny) and Brad Butts; grandchildren, Katye, Ellery, Ryan, Lauren, Chelsea, Morgan, Madison, Angela, Nigel, Joshua, Matthew and Michael; and five great-grandchildren.
His Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, June 4, 2010 at 10 a.m. at Arch L. Heady at Resthaven Chapel, 4400 Bardstown Road with burial to follow in Resthaven Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday.
Memorial contributions may be made to the V.A. Hospice of Louisville, Kosair Charities or the Apple Patch Community.
