Hulin Lee "Sam" Bundy, a cherished patriarch, decorated veteran, and pillar of his community, passed away peacefully on November 19, 2024, in Louisville, KY, just shy of his 100th birthday. Born on November 24, 1924, in Centralia, IL, Sam's long and remarkable life was characterized by his wisdom, generosity, and courage.
Sam was the beloved husband of the former, Mary Kathryn Underwood, with whom he shared a remarkable 76 years of marriage. Their enduring love was a testament to their commitment and the foundation of a family that includes their children: Lawrence L. Bundy and his wife Kathy, Kathryn J. Evans and her husband Paul, and James H. Bundy. Their family continued to grow with grandchildren: Macy Young (Casey), Bailey Hoard (Stephen), Tyler Evans (Scarlett), Austin Bundy and Grace Evans; and great grandchildren: Ryleigh Young, Reise Young, Daisy Evans, Harrison Hoard, Maxwell Hoard, Coco Hoard, and Marleigh Sarver. Sam's role as a husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather were the most treasured of his life, and he instilled in his family the values of integrity, resilience, and kindness.
A proud alumnus of the University of Kentucky, Sam graduated in 1949 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. His education laid the groundwork for a successful career, but it was his service in the United States Army during World War II that defined much of his early life. As a veteran and former Prisoner of War, Sam earned both a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart, honors that spoke to his bravery and sacrifice. His experiences during the war shaped his worldview and his unwavering appreciation for the freedoms he fought to protect.
Beyond his professional accomplishments and military service, Sam was an avid fan of UK sports, a passion that often found him cheering on his favorite teams with the same fervor he approached all aspects of his life. His enthusiasm for the games was infectious, and many fond memories were made in the stands, surrounded by family and friends.
Those who knew Sam would describe him as a man of great wisdom, whose advice was sought after by many. His generous spirit was evident in the way he lived his life, always ready to lend a helping hand or a listening ear. Courageous in both his youth and his later years, Sam faced challenges with a quiet strength and an unwavering resolve.
As we bid farewell to Hulin Lee "Sam" Bundy, we reflect on a life well-lived and a legacy that will continue to inspire.
