After graduation from high school in 1945 he entered the USAAF and left the service in December of 1948. Upon leaving the service he entered college preparing for a career in business law and became a member of the Air Force Reserve. Later he was called into the ministry and upon graduation from college spent 12 years in Mexico with his first wife, Norma McCollum, doing pioneer mission work. A school he founded is still going strong to this day.
Dr. McCollum retired as an active pastor on Easter Sunday, April 1994. For about three and a one half years he worked out of First Baptist Church of Milford, OH in the Bearing Precious Seed Ministry. In July of 1997 he joined the Staff of Harvest Baptist Church in Fairdale, KY as Pastor of Evangelism and Missions. After 22 years of service he retired on January 1, 2020 at the age of 92. Dr. McCollum served the Lord full time for 68 years.
Dr. McCollum was preceded in rest by his first wife, Norma McCollum; and a son, Joel McCollum.
He is survived by his wife, Marie Mills McCollum; three sons, Mark McCollum (Cindy), Paul McCollum (Debbie) and Tim McCollum (Jan); a daughter, Cherry Cubbage; 14 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
His funeral will be on Friday, December 29, 2023, at 10:00 AM at the Harvest Baptist Church, 9205 Brown Austin Rd, with interment following in Beth Haven Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday from 4pm until 7pm at the Heady-Hardy Funeral Home, 7710 Dixie Highway.
