She was born on July 17, 1920 in New Orleans, LA to Ruffin Trousdale Perkins and the former Catharine Caroline Churchill. She was one of four children and the last to survive.
Her father, whom she affectionately called Bucky, was a physician who specialized in the care of military veterans, many of whom had been seriously injured in WW I. As a result, her childhood was a bit nomadic as her father took assignments in Ohio, Virginia, and Florida. It was in Lake City, FL, where she was attending high school, that she met Myron Crawford who she would fall in love with and eventually wed. Though both she and Myron at first pursued college degrees, he at the University of Florida and she at Newcomb College, they decided that marriage and a family was what they wanted most and they tied the knot in May of 1941. Eventually, they would be blessed with three daughters, Skitchy, Kippy, and Penny. As the girls grew, Mrs. Crawford became a homemaker, Girl Scout leader, and faithful member of the Taylor Blvd. Church of Christ and Watterson Trail Church of Christ. Her involvement in scouting went well beyond her children’s participa-tion as she remained a Girl Scout leader and organizer for some 50 years, a feat for which the Girl Scouts gratefully recognized her.
Myron passed away in 1974, leaving Mrs. Crawford a widow for nearly 40 years. During that time she occupied herself with all things family and became an invaluable resource to the next generation of youngsters in her life, her beloved grandchildren.
Mrs. Crawford was an avid reader. Though there was no genre she necessarily favored over another, she especially loved a good mystery. It seemed there was no Agatha Christie novel she hadn’t read multiple times. She was a master game player, as well, and could beat anyone at Scrabble.
She was also a top-notch cook. Her potato salad was without peer and its recipe continues to be carefully handed down through the generations.
Mrs. Crawford is survived by her daughters Hephzibah and hus-band Michael of Greensboro, NC; Catharine Young and husband Larry, and Millicent Carter and husband Kevin, all of Louisville; grandchildren Catharine Young (Hank Walton) of Atlanta, and Kate Roskelly (Jamie Budzick), and Nick Roskelly (Anna Searcy) of Chicago, and Oliver Carter (Laura), and Neil Carter both of Louisville; and great grandchildren Addie and Harry Walton of Atlanta, and Elsie Budzick of Chicago.
There will be a funeral service to honor the life of Mrs. Crawford at 12pm on Thursday, September 11, 2014 at Evergreen Funeral Home, with entombment to follow in Evergreen Cemetery.
Visitation for the public will be from 3-8pm on Wednesday and from 10am-12pm on Thursday at the funeral home.
In lieu of gifts of condolence, the family urges gifts be made to the Girl Scouts of America in Mrs. Crawford’s honor.
