Born August 2, 1920 in Waddy, Kentucky. Helen was one of 2 children born to Raymond and Ruby Cook - Snider. Helen and her sister Jean were orphaned at a very early age. Helen's father Raymond served in the first World War leaving a parental void filled by her grandparents who had already raised 10 kids. Now her grandparents were raising not only Helen but also her sister Jean.
Helen and Jean alike, faced many different but difficult hardships. Growing up, Helen lived in Waddy and eloped at 16, marrying Herb moving to Shelbyville where she lived on a farm and helped with the daily chores and tended to the dairy cattle that she helped raise.
Helen was blessed with a daughter, Judy. Judy was Helen's pride and joy, not to be confused with Herb who she loved very dearly. Helen was left with a void, after Herb's passing in 1985, she moved to Jeffersonville, Indiana where she met her very best friend, VJ & Rao, who she talked to every day. Helen was a nursing assistant with Jewish Hospital where she retired. In 2004, Helen moved just a few houses down from her sister Jean, they were inseparable. Helen was fond of Elvis and his music. She was a member of W.O.W. (Widow or Widowers), Beargrass Christian Church and was a faithful advocate of the Cedar Lake Lodge & Foundation.
At 95, Helen purchased a brand new car. Over her 100 years, Helen lived a full and gracious life. She was so excited to live freely and independently, driving, going grocery shopping, even dancing with no aide or caregivers. Helen loved to dance, taking lessons up until just a few months ago. Helen surely had a lasting relationship with her nephews, Mike and Jim who called her from week to week. Helen can always be remembered for saying, "As long as I'm not in pain, I have nothing to complain."
Helen was a caregiver and patient, passionate and gentle by nature caring for and loving her daughter, Judy, unconditionally.
Helen is preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Ruby Cook - Snider; sister, Jean Wells and husband Herbert Cox.
Left to cherish Helen's memory are her daughter, Judith "Judy" Cox; niece, Debra (Mike) Perdue; nephews, Michael (Ivania) Wells and James (Shannon) Wells; cousins, Keith and Martha Cox, Charlotte Gilbert and Shirley Noel and her bestfriends VJ and Rao.
