Frederick William Schmidt, Sr., died on January 27, 2012, in Phoenix, Arizona. He was 86 years old.
Born in Louisville on September 27, 1925, “Fred” or “Fritz” (as he was known to his family) grew up in the city’s “West End.” With the assistance of his father, father-in-law and older brother, he built a home for his family. A longtime resident of Fern Creek and maintained his membership at Highland Park Baptist Church.
A materials handling engineer, he worked for over twenty years at Louisville’s Logan Company, and subsequently for a variety of other firms as an independent contractor. He served in the Army Air Corps and at the end of World War II was stationed at officer’s training school in Odessa, Texas. He was also a member of Shawnee Masonic Lodge and a 32nd degree Mason.
Fred was predeceased by his wife, Pauline Ruth (Ralston), who died in 2000.
He is survived by two sons, the Reverend Dr. Frederick William Schmidt, Jr., of Dallas, Texas; Dr. David Mark Schmidt of Nashville, Tennessee; and his daughter, Mrs. Sandra Schmidt Leach of Phoenix, Arizona. He also leaves behind four grandchildren, Michael, Eric, Lindsay, and Molly. He will also be missed by his special friends, Pinkerbell and Bisby.
A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted at 10 am Monday February 6, 2012 in the Chapel of Arch L. Heady at Resthaven 4400 Bardstown Road, Interment to follow at Resthaven memorial Park. Visitation will be held Sunday 2-6 pm.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Fred’s memory to Highland Park Baptist Church, 7321 Billtown Road, Louisville, KY 40299.
