He was born February 4, 1937 in Sonora KY. He was preceded in death by his parents, Zula (Forbes)and Paul Thompson and also by his daughter; Madonna Lee Thompson.
He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Mary LaVerne (Newton) Thompson; his children, Melodye Schueler(Matt), Cheryle Kuntz (Kevin) and Mark Thompson (Carol). Donnie is also survived by seven grandchildren, Adam Thompson, Chad Thompson, Madonna Schueler (Dr. Ryan Wermeling), Aaron Thompson, Matthew Schueler (Elizabeth Oppenheim), Jacqueline Goldsmith (Ian), and Michelle Barbosa (Santiago), one great granddaughter, Kaia Schueler and one sister, Karen Bond (Glenn).
Don proudly served in the US Army Reserve earning the rank of Major and retiring after 27 years of service in 1977. He also served in the US Air Force & Army National Guard. He worked for the Railroad; (L&N, Seaboard and CSX) and retired after 36 years.
He was a private pilot and enjoyed aviation history. He liked boating, playing golf and spent many of his retirement hours as a volunteer at World Golf in St. Augustine, FL. Don loved planes, trains and cars. He mostly loved time spent with his family, taking the kids and grandkids, boating, swimming and on trips to Disney.
Guests are invited to attend a visitation from 3-8 pm on Wednesday, June 29, 2022 at Arch L. Heady & Son at Westport Village, 7410 Westport Rd. Louisville KY 40222. A Mass of Christian Burial will be said at 9:30 am on Thursday, June 30, 2022 at St. Louis Bertrand Catholic Church, 1104 S. 6th St. Louisville KY, 40203 with interment and military honors to follow at Louisville Memorial Gardens West Cemetery, 4400 Dixie Hwy, Louisville, KY, 40216.
