Daugherty, David Lawrence returned to his Heavenly Father on September 18, 2016 at the age of 80. He was born of Stanley and Alma Daugherty in Louisville who, along with a brother, Donald W. Daugherty, preceded him in passing and is survived by his devoted and encouraging wife of 56 years, Audrey Powell Daugherty, sister Joan Daugherty and numerous nephews and nieces.
A graduate of Atherton High School (1954), he was honored as an inductee to their Hall of Fame after varied and numerous careers, most of which were highly successful. He has always acknowledged the power and love of Jesus Christ as instrumental in his various endeavors. A graduate of the University of Louisville’s School of Engineering, he served in the Army and later was employed by the Corps of Engineers as a navigation lock and dam/flood control dam designer. In the 1970’s he was a full time consultant to Jefferson Fiscal Court and established the first storm water management regulatory program in this region which gave metropolitan citizens unprecedented protections against flooding effects from unchecked new development.
In the 1980’s he founded five corporations of varying scopes and purposes, one of which, EAS Technologies, developed one of the world’s first automated time labor management systems which proved popular. His company thereafter was the first to automate the entire US Army NAFI worldwide. That success culminated in his business being acquired by Fortune 500 Company. His acquisition of wealth from this source was attributed to Jesus Christ who intervened in the course of disastrous events critical times. He culminated his career by creating and building Cathedral Gardens in southern Indiana, acclaimed as one of the nation’s largest and most beautiful gardens and a tribute to Jesus Christ. For 15 years his gardens welcomed over 20,000 guests of many different faiths from all of the world. He published several books relating to the Gardens and encouraged readers to find their own creativity gifted by Almighty God.
He was a 32nd degree mason, a lifelong member of Edenside Christian Church, a recipient of U of L’s Outstanding Engineer award and Louisville’s Entrepreneur award, and a personalized autographed blessing from Pope Benedict.
A service to honor the life of David will be held Thursday at 10am in the Chapel of Arch L. Heady at Resthaven Funeral Home with burial to follow in Resthaven Memorial Park. Visitation will be Wednesday from 2-7pm at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy can be made to Kosair Children’s Charities.
