Charles was born in Bluff City, TN to the late James and Louise Smith. He had a successful career for 34 years as a Broadcast Engineer for WHAS Television. In addition to his television career, he had become a Christian Minister and pastored New Washington Christian Church (New Washington, IN) for 8 years and Antioch Christian Church in Elizabeth, IN for 22 years.
Charles was baptized at South Louisville Christian Church (now Southeast Christian South Louisville Campus) and has been a member there for many years. He received Masters Degrees at both Louisville Bible College and Kentucky Christian College.
He was an Air Force veteran, having served four years during the Cold War. Some of his hobbies include ham radio and travel (especially taking cruises), and he was an animal lover, particularly of cats.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, David Smith; and a sister, Linda Brewer. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Peggy Olson Smith; a son, Charles E. Smith Jr. of New Orleans, LA; niece, Sharon Brewer; and nephew Steven Brewer (Christine); and extended family that includes brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, and nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 2-8 pm Sunday and from 11am-12pm Monday at Arch L. Heady & son Funeral Home, 3601 Taylor Blvd. His funeral service will be held at 12:00 Monday followed by burial at Resthaven Memorial Park.
Per Charles’ wishes, in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the WHAS Crusade for Children.
