He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert E. Lane and Ruby Katherine (Sale) Lane; his beloved wife of 46 years, Phyllis Ann (Murphy) Lane; and his brother, Ronald Lane.
Bruce is lovingly remembered by his sons Danny (Karen), Brent (Sherry), and Paul (Sharon); grandchildren Nathan (Morgan), Emily, Sarah, and Kimbra Lane; great-granddaughter Lennon Lane; his devoted companion Betty Spencer; and a host of extended family and cherished friends.
A proud graduate of Flaget High School, Bruce went on to earn degrees from the University of Louisville and the University of California at Berkeley. His dedication to public service spanned over three decades. He began his career in the Food and Drug Program at the Kentucky State Health Department and later served 25 years with the Louisville and Jefferson County Health Department, retiring in 1989 as Deputy Director.
Bruce’s professional accomplishments were many. He was a lifetime member and past president of both the Kentucky Health Association and the Kentucky Association of Milk, Food, and Environmental Sanitarians. He received numerous accolades from both state and local agencies for his contributions. He was also a proud member of the Knights of Columbus and was Commissioned by Governor Julian M. Carroll October 28, 1975 as a Kentucky Colonel.
A man of deep faith, Bruce was a member of Mother of Good Counsel and later, St. Bernadette Catholic Church. He was a lifelong supporter of the University of Louisville Athletics, a founding member of the University of Louisville’s University Club, the Sportsmen’s Supper Club of Louisville, and a member of the Central Cardinal Club.
Bruce had a zest for life and a deep love for the outdoors. He enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, the arts, and traveling. Above all, he was a kind, generous soul who never met a stranger. His greatest joy came from time spent with his family and friends.
Visitation will be held at Arch L. Heady and Son Funeral Home, 7410 Westport Rd., Louisville, KY 40222, on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, from 4:00–8:00 PM, and on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, from 9:00–9:30 AM.
A Funeral Mass will follow at 10:00 AM on Wednesday at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, 6500 St. Bernadette Ave., Prospect, KY 40059. Interment will take place at Resthaven Memorial Park, 4400 Bardstown Rd., Louisville, KY 40218.
