Bruce Whitney Barnes, 82, of Louisville, KY, passed away at his home, surrounded by family, on July 2, 2023. Bruce was a lifelong resident of Louisville was the second of four sons of Lloyd and Florence Barnes. He was born Feb 6, 1941 and married his one true love, Mary Frances Kennedy on October 6, 1962. They were married for 42 years until Mary passed in 2004.
Anyone knowing Bruce knew that he was a kind and compassionate man. He had a generous heart and never hesitated to help others when they needed it. During his professional career, he worked at St Joseph Infirmary and at Audubon Hospital in the radiology department. After retiring from the hospital he took a part time job for the Louisville Parks and Recreation department just to have something to do. This turned into a second career.
Bruce had several hobbies including cruises, golf, woodworking, fishing and of course spending time with family and friends. His commitment to recycling aluminum cans took him on daily walks along the sides of the roads in Southwest Jefferson County picking up cans.
Bruce was an amazing husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He was preceded in death by his brother, Wayne Barnes. He is survived by his two brothers: Dennis and Michael Barnes; children: Whitney Fore of Brandenburg, KY, Courtney Blocker (Dan) Louisville, KY and Derrick Barnes (Mistianna) Louisville, KY; and grandchildren: Jackson Fore of Louisville, KY, Maggie Fore of Charlotte, NC, Craig Blocker and Sydney Blocker of Louisville, KY and Kailee Barnes of Louisville, KY. The last years of his life, Dad enjoyed the company of his special friend Patricia (Tishie)Tischendorf. They had known each other for years and we are so grateful to her as she made his life better. He is also survived by his faithful canine companion, Franny (aka Snitzelfritz).
A funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, July 6th at 2:30 p.m. at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, 7813 Shelbyville Rd. Louisville, KY 40222. A bereavement meal and visitation will follow the Mass.
