Dick was born in Fairfield, Texas on August 4, 1931 and grew up in El Paso, Texas. He joined the U. S. Army in 1948 at age 17, was stationed in Japan, and fought in the Korean War during 1948-50. Dick served in C Company, 8th Combat Engineer Battalion, First Cavalry Division. He was wounded in combat and was medevac’d to Japan, where he recovered, and then returned to his unit in Korea to fight again for the remainder of the conflict.
Upon his release from active duty, Dick married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Jordan, and had two sons, Rick and Tim. He relocated to Morro Bay and worked for PG & E, helping to build the smokestacks and power plant. In 1964, after a divorce, Dick married Harriet Weaver and added two more sons to his family, Bob and Dale Weaver. After Harriet passed away, Dick married Linda Krutak and gained a daughter, Veronica, to his ever-growing family.
Dick worked as an operating engineer for many years throughout the California region, including the California Aqueduct, the San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant, Whale Rock Dam, the Diablo Nuclear Power Plant, and several other projects in San Luis Obispo County.
Dick was kind, generous, and loving to friends and family alike, and was a ‘rock’ in the community.
Dick volunteered as a docent at the San Luis Obispo Veterans Museum for 17 years. He has lived in the same house on Cerrito Place in Morro Bay for more than 50 years.
He is survived by his loving wife, Linda Holman, sons Rick, Bob, Dale, and daughter Veronica, 11 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 12 pm on February 3, 2018 at the El Moro Church of the Nazarene, 1480 Santa Ysabel in Los Osos. A graveside service will be held at 2 pm at Los Osos Memorial Park, 2260 Los Osos Valley Road,, Los Osos, CA 93402.
