Mitchell Peter “Wahoo” Chaplin, 82, of New Diana, Texas, passed away on Saturday, April 27, 2013 at a nursing center in Longview. Mr. Chaplin was born on September 27, 1930 in Campti, Louisiana to Felix and Ozelia Perrault Chaplin. Mr. Chaplin served in the United States Army for one year and nine months during which he deployed to the Korean Peninsula (Fourth Army Area) to fight in the Korean War for ten months and nineteen days. He then rose to the rank of Corporal and earned two Bronze Stars. He was Honorably Discharged on January 15, 1953. He then returned home and married Ruby May Sanders on December 21, 1955. She preceded him in death on February 1, 1985. Mr. Chaplin was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and VFW Post 4002. He retired from Marathon LeTourneau after over 30 years of service to them.
Mr. Chaplin is survived by daughters: Ruby Olvera and her husband Jose of Kilgore, Beverly Newman and her husband Bill of Clinton, OK., Sue Valsquez and her husband Robert of Longview; Sons: Ray Chaplin and his wife Vicki of New Braunfels, Jesse Phelps of Longview, and Michael Chaplin of Longview; eight grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; brothers and sisters: Curtis Chaplin, Rose Chaplin, Lucille Easterling, Julia Chaplin and Otis Chaplin.
A Rosary will be read at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at the Chapel of Lakeview Funeral Home with funeral services starting at 10:00 a.m. also at the Chapel of the Lakeview Funeral Home, Longview, TX. Interment will follow at Lakeview Memorial Gardens under the direction of Lakeview Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 6-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 30, 2013 at the funeral home.
