James graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from East Texas State University, now Texas A & M Commerce. It was there that he met Mary Lynn Brown. They were married May 30, 1953 in Mt. Pleasant. James served in the United States Army before becoming an industrial arts teacher at Rankin ISD. He was a longtime employee of White Oak ISD before his retirement. He was a member of the Pine Tree Church of Christ.
He is survived by his son, Mark Lain and his wife, Dana, of Austin; daughter, Melinda Hargis and her husband, Brent, of Longview; grandchildren, Samuel Lain of Austin; Alli Sandlin and her husband, Adam, of Denton; Caroline Hargis of Longview and fiancé, Jesse Crider of San Marcos; and Zach Hargis of Longview; great-granddaughter, Ayla Lain; brother, Robert Lain, of Fort Worth; sister, Elizabeth Guthrie and her husband, James, of Winnsboro; brother-in-law, Jimmy McKillip; and many nieces, nephews and extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 60 years, Mary Lynn; his sister, Mary Lou McKillip; and one grandson, Clayton Hargis.
The family would like to express their gratitude to his caregivers Jessica, Sheila and Meredythe who took such wonderful care of "PopPop" during the last year. Memorial contributions may be made to Heartsway Hospice or the charity of your choice.
