On the early morning hours of October 11,2022, Bill Hughes died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Longmont. William Ronald Hughes, 75, was born in Berkeley, California on August 10th, 1947.
Bill grew up in San Diego. He graduated from Clairmont High School His B.A. was in Applied Physics and Informational Science from the University of California, San Diego. His Masters was from San Diego State University, and he received his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from University of California, Santa Barbara in 1981.
Bill enjoyed a varied, productive career. He taught Electrical Engineering at University of Colorado, Boulder, moving on to the management of Columbine Data Systems, working at the Department of Commerce, N.T.I.A., as well as consulting for private software engineering companies. He was honored with a Silver Medal Award for technical leadership from the Department of Commerce and was a lifetime member of IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers).
Bill was a devoted husband and father. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Janis. He loved his children, Jeffrey and Elisabeth, as well as their spouses, Jennifer and Jesse. Of course, he was involved in all aspects of his grandchildren’s lives, Anna, Westen, and Dylin. He cherished his brothers, Robert and David, their spouses, Kristin and Judy, and their families.
Bill loved anything to do with space, travel, technology, and his family.
