She was born in 1934 in Denver, CO, the daughter of Herbert E. and Martha A. Prater. Sue met her husband, Burnham Newton Gossett, through her cousin, Herb Gardner, who was Newt’s best friend. They married in 1952 in Kansas. They lived in Denver, Boulder, CO and California then moved to Boulder, CO in 1959 where they lived until 1995.
Deaf since age four, Sue overcame many obstacles to become a successful businesswoman, loving wife, and mother. Her family was her greatest joy. Sue had an accounting and tax business and was able to work from home, beginning in the early 1960’s. She loved telling stories of her hearing-ear dogs or the various pets of her children. Sue enjoyed studying family history and recording the genealogy of our family, especially her Cherokee heritage.
After Sue received her cochlear implants, she became very involved in helping others who were deaf and encouraged many to seek cochlear implants.
Sue and Newt enjoyed hiking, camping, white water canoeing, Nordic skiing, and various travels around the US. Other travels included Europe, seaplane fishing in Canada, walking tours of France and Italy and sailing in the Caribbean.
Sue Gossett is survived by her husband of 71 years, Newton Gossett, three sons, David and Diane Gossett, Broomfield, CO, Daniel and Stephanie Gossett, Eaton, CO, Joel and Ann Gossett, Tonasket, WA, daughter, Kathryn and Philip Miner, Harrisville, NH; 13 grandchildren Zoe Gossett, Alaina Gossett, Phillip Fettig, Donald Fettig, and Julie Mercer, Edward Gossett, Joseph and Vanessa Gossett, Sarah and Jason Winder, Matthew Gossett, Jonathan and Jillian Miner, Anna and Andrew Ritchie, Emily and Nathan Martin, Amy Miner, 18 great-grandchildren and two great, great-grandchildren. Sue is survived by her sister Lee and William Yost and many nieces and nephews. Her parents and sister and brother-in-law Ann and Jack Schlager predeceased her,as well as her grandson Mark Settig.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, August 11, 2023, at Central Presbyterian Church with the Reverend John T. Watkin officiating.
Inurnment will be in Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver at a later date.
