Ruth Yost

Ruth Marion Yost, 96, of Longmont passed away September 22, 2014. She was born March 3, 1918, on a farm near Clifton, Kansas to Edward and Annie (McInturff) Germann. Being the youngest of four siblings by eight years, Ruth always loved to be outside helping her dad (Pops) on the farm. When she was nine years old her sisters and brother all left home, so she began helping her mom in the house. At age thirteen her mother had such bad rheumatoid arthritis that Ruth had to do all the gardening, cooking, and baking for the family and hired farm workers. Ruth attended her first eight grades in a one-room country school. She attended high school in Clay Center and stayed in town through the week with her Grandma Germann, and later at a boarding house, graduating as the Valedictorian of her class. Ruth attended college at the University of Kansas and graduated with Phi Beta Kappa honors in Education. Here she met Byron (Bud) Yost whom she married on April 4, 1942 in Lawrence, Kansas. They enjoyed 72 years together. In the early years of their marriage, Ruth taught high school for seven years and then worked as a secretary/receptionist for a doctor while Bud was in Medical School at KU. In 1951 they moved to the Erie/Longmont area where they remained to raise their family of four girls. Ruth was a dedicated wife and mother, teaching her daughters all that she could while still being involved in various community organizations and events. Ruth was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ where she taught Sunday School and served on the Women's Fellowship Committee for many years, Boulder County and Longmont Medical Auxiliary through which she volunteered many hours with the GEMS program (Girls Entering Medical Service), was a 4-H Leader for eight years, active for many years and held high offices in AAUW, St. Vrain Roundup Club, Longmont Library Board, and St. Vrain Music Association. She shared many interests with Bud, including history, cultures, music, art, tennis, riding their Gold Wing motorcycle, skiing, and horse adventures. Her personal hobbies were baking, sewing, gardening, and traveling. She loved inviting friends over for home-made pie and ice cream. She always mentioned that she would love to have had a pie shop and her family members were the happy participants in her baking ventures. She truly knew how to make a Home Sweet Home. Ruth is preceded in death by her husband Bud, her parents, her sister Mable Stanert, her brother Howard Germann, and her sister Eda Beard. She is survived by her daughters “ Rebecca Curtis (Jay) of Colorado Springs, Sally Jesser (Bill) of Longmont, Penny Zvejnieks (Sig) of Rapid City, SD, and Trudy Shepard (Guy) of Missoula, MT; grandchildren “ Robert Curtis (Margaret), David Curtis, Mandy Jesser, Teri Jesser, Kip Jesser, Kyle Zvejnieks, Jaclyn Zvejnieks, and Nathan Zvejnieks. Also is survived by her cherished nephews and niece Ralph and Eddie Germann, and Ramona Norcross. along with many great nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank everyone who cared for Ruth at the Atria of Longmont Assisted Living Facility, Family Hospice and SummerCares Home Health Agency.
