Dick was born to P. Keith Spangler and Katherine Hartman on October 19, 1933 in Longmont. Long time pioneer family, his grandfather D.W. Spangler served as Superintendent of the St. Vrain Valley for a number of years. He graduated from Longmont High School in 1951, where he was active in the basketball program and DeMolay.
Dick attended both the University of Colorado and Colorado State University before joining the U.S. Army. Upon his return from active duty, he joined Hogsett Lumber, where he worked as a salesman. He joined the real estate market and was instrumental in the ownership of The Fort Real Estate. He owned and operated Sunnyvale Liquors from 1980-2005. An entrepreneur he owned and managed multiple properties in Longmont and owned numerous properties in the Allenspark area.
Dick married Joan Rice Bender on April 19, 1969 in Longmont. They were members of LifeBridge Christian Church. The Spangler’s were annually recognized for the Christmas Home Decorating. For over 30 years they were listed as a must stop in Longmont for over the top lighting and décor, having received the fabled Clark Griswold award.
Surviving are his wife of Longmont; son Scott (Rhonda) Spangler of Raymond, Colorado; daughters Cathy Mally of Longmont; Susan (George) Richart of Centennial; Anne Ewing of Longmont; and Stephanie (David) Juarez of Timnath, Colorado; grandchildren Chad Craig, Derek (Lacey) Mally, Brooke Mally, Ryland Richart, Joseph Richart, Tyler Ewing, MacKenzie Ewing, Cole Jolin, Haley Juarez, Alex Juarez, Peyton Juarez and Gunnar Juarez, Paul (Janel) Gaines, and Elizabeth (Tim) Woods; and great grandchildren Jacob, Zak, Jayden, Gage, Kendyl.
Preceding in death are his parents and a brother John Spangler.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 6 at the Howe Mortuary Chapel. Private interment will follow at Longmont Mountain View Cemetery.
