Richard (Dick) L. Keppel, beloved Husband, Father, Brother and Grandfather, passed away May 14th at Atria Care Center in Longmont. Richard was born on July 5, 1927 in Nazareth, Pennsylvania to Leopold Keppel and Theresia (Deutsch) Keppel.
Richard grew up and attended parochial schools in the Nazareth area before graduating from Nazareth High School. An accomplished athlete, "Bismarck" was proud of his accomplishments on the football field. Upon graduation Richard joined the U.S. Navy where he served on Minesweepers in the Pacific Theater until the surrender of Japan. After the war he attended Pennsylvania State University from which he was awarded a Bachelor of Science in Geography. Richard then went to the University of Washington, completing his Masters Degree in Cartography. He went on to work cartography for several companies, including contributing to the Apollo space project.
After moving to Boulder, Colorado in 1965 with his wife Augusta and son David, he continued to work in cartography at the High School Geography Project and Kistler Graphics. In 1985 he moved to San Anselmo, California and married Elizabeth Johnson. Dick and Betty enjoyed their life in the Bay Area, attending many events and eating at their favorite restaurant, Pucci's. After their retirement, he and Betty moved to Longmont to enjoy life close to his grandson.
Richard is survived by family including his wife Elizabeth Johnson; son, David; grandsons Phillip and Shane and great-grandson Hunter; brothers Tom, Albert, Eugene and Edward along with a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers George, Leo, Henry, Paul and sister Margaret.
A visitation will be held 11:00 Tuesday, May 23rd at Howe Mortuary. Interment will be at Fort Logan National Cemetery at a later date.
