Max A. Schaffer, 96, of Longmont passed away on July 8, 2024. Max was born on September 28, 1927, in Ashland, Ohio, the son of Wilfred and Mary Schaffer (Lybarger). He is survived by his wife, Shirley Schaffer (Thrasher); his children, Scott Schaffer and Sandra Jonas (Schaffer); his grandson, Chris Marcione; and his great-grandson, Magnus Marcione. He is preceded in death by his son Jack Schaffer; father, Wilfred Schaffer; mother, Mary Schaffer; and sister Margret Mormon (Schaffer).
Max lived a long, happy, and successful life. He served in the navy from 1945 to 1947 and then attended Case Institute of Technology, graduating in 1952 with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. Soon after, he married his wife, Shirley, and was married to her for 72 years.
Max spent his career designing inertial guidance systems for various companies throughout the United States, including Sperry Gyroscope and Litton Guidance and Control Systems. He was awarded several patents for his work. In his later years, Max enjoyed traveling around the country on a motorcycle with Shirley for month-long trips. Devoted to his family, he imparted many valuable lessons to those around him. He will be missed.
