Lawrence “Larry” Gerald Powers, 92, passed away peacefully and surrounded by his family on Saturday, February 18, 2023. Larry was born the second of four children to John and Hazel Powers in an old mining town named Alamo, Colorado, in October, 1930. He graduated from Canon City High School. For a brief time after graduation, Larry worked in a coal mine where his dad was the fireboss of the mine.
Larry joined the United States Air Force in September of 1949. While in the Air Force, Larry was the crew chief, and later Quality Control and Planning, for B-47s, KC-135s, and Air Force One. Larry was stationed in Japan for five years. He served during the Korean and Vietnam wars. It was during Larry’s assignment to the Air Force base in Colorado Springs that he met and married the love of his life, Ida “Corky” Connery. Larry’s wife and children were the loves of his life, and he was very proud of them. Larry retired from the Air Force in 1970. He graduated from the University of Northern Colorado with a master’s degree as a Reading Specialist and taught at Long’s Peak Jr. High in Longmont, Colorado for five years. After teaching, he became a quality manager at Storage Technology Corporation.
In 1985 Larry was diagnosed with Cone-Rod Dystrophy. His sight began to deteriorate. While this is a tragedy to most people, it spurred Larry on to better himself in any way possible. Larry kept physically, mentally, and spiritually fit. He listened to many books and was active in his church. To sum up Larry’s life in one sentence, “Larry Powers is a man of character and discipline; respected by others and deeply loved by all who know him.”
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, John and Hazel Powers; his sister and brother-in-law, Margie and Jimmy Moreno; his brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Phyllis Powers; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ralph and Hazel Connery; and his son-in-law, John Galbavy. He is survived by his loving wife, Ida Powers; his children Teri (Skip) Dodson, Cheri Powers, and Sandy (Nick) DeCino; his grandchildren, Alyssa (Marshall) Johnson; John Connor Galbavy; Blake (Mica) Powers; Alec (Rachel Jensen) Gee; Tori (James) Lowery; Liam Gee; Chris and Aindrea Dodson. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren: MaKean, Capriese, Lillian, Adalynn, and Braxton. Other surviving family is his dear brother, Chuck Powers, and a number of wonderful nieces and nephews.
