John was born on October 19, 1941 to Wesley and Lena Shandy in Syracuse, Kansas. John grew up in Delta, Colorado with his three brothers, going to school, working on the family homestead, and having fun with his brothers, cousins, and friends. The family later moved to Denver, Colorado where John graduated from South High School in 1959.
While in high school, John met Madeline Bennett at a church function and John and Madeline were married in the spring of 1960. John and Madeline went on to have three children: Madeline, Sandra, and Johnny. John worked at Sears and Roebuck and Russel Stover as a delivery driver. In 1963, John and Madeline started John’s Lock Shop located at 14th and Walnut in Boulder which later became Boulder Security Center. In addition to owning Boulder Security Center, John and Madeline opened The Lockshop of Cheyenne and Flatirons Wholesale Supply. John was active in the Rocky Mountain Locksmith Association (RMLA) and the Associated Locksmiths of America (ALOA) serving in a variety of officer roles including president of RMLA and board member and education coordinator for ALOA.
John and Madeline sold Boulder Security Center in1996 but continued to remain active in the locksmith industry until they retired. During John’s retirement years, John enjoyed spending time with his brother Jim in Nebraska, travelling to Alaska to visit his brothers Dave and Darrel, and flying to Hawaii on several occasions to attend his grandchildren’s weddings and to celebrate his 80th birthday with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. John especially loved the time he spent with his great grandchildren going to their birthday parties, soccer games, and Christmas celebrations, and face timing with his great grandkids in Hawaii.
John is preceded in death by his parents, Wesley and Lena Shandy; his beloved wife, Madeline; and his three brothers David, Calvin James, and Darrel Dean Shandy.
John is survived by his three children, Madeline (Deborah) Shandy-Smith, Sandra (James) Bafia, and John Shandy; his three grandchildren, Nathin (Anna) Shandy, Camie (Eric) Pitman, and Levi (Bailey) Shandy; his six great grandchildren, Gracie and Milo Shandy; Madeline Soltren, Jade and Mason Pitman; and Liah Shandy; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 5:00pm to 7:00pm on September 25, 2023 at Howe Mortuary, 439 Coffman Street in Longmont, Colorado. Funeral services will be held at the LDS Church, 2200 11th Avenue in Longmont, Colorado on September 26, 2023 at 11:00am with viewing from 10:00am to 11:00am. Burial at Mountain View Cemetery, 620 11th Avenue in Longmont, Colorado, will immediate follow the funeral service at 1 pm.
