Joan was born on May 1, 1930, in Lennox, SD, to William and Laura Simon. She was the youngest sibling to DeLora, Eileen, Phyllis, and James. Among Joan’s high school memories, were working as pin setter at the local bowling alley, and her senior class prank, which was to march a cow up to the top story of the school, only to learn that cows do not care to walk down stairs.
Joan graduated from Sioux Valley Hospital in 1951 and became a registered nurse. She married Roger McCoppin on February 2, 1952. While Roger served in the Air Force, Joan worked as a labor and delivery nurse and continued helping deliver thousands of babies over her nearly 40-year career. Most importantly, Joan was a loving wife, daughter, sister, aunt, mom, granny, great-granny, and friend. Her children knew her to be kind, attentive, and wise. Each of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren believed that they were her favorite because she had a way of making them all feel special. Her friends knew that they could always confide in her, and that she would love them without judgement.
At home, in her bedroom, with her daughter by her side, Joan took her last breath in the early morning hours of September 27, 2024. She had looked forward to joining her husband, parents, and siblings in Heaven, and will be deeply missed here on Earth by her children and their spouses, John (Sue), Tom (Lorraine), Scott, and Dianne (Jerry), her grandchildren (Jesse, Collin, Summer, Anne, and Audrey), and her ten great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Meals on Wheels of Loveland & Berthoud or to Pathways Hospice for the tremendous love, care, and comfort these organizations provided to Joan.
Private services will be held. Joan will be laid to rest at Mountain View Cemetery of Longmont, CO.
