Joan was born to Jack and Ila Anna Cowell on March 23, 1943 in Lincoln, Nebraska. Her family moved to Hastings, Nebraska in 1954. Joan attended school there and graduated in 1961. She married husband Ken in Ft. Collins, Colorado on October 19, 1961. They lived in Norfolk, Virginia for a year while Ken completed his Navy hitch. They moved back to Hastings where, 2 months later, they had a son, Douglas Scott. Off to Loveland, Colorado where their daughter Deborah Renee was born on February 1, 1963 the same day as her brother Doug. Joan worked at Hewlett Packard in those days as well as raising her beloved children and became a wonderful family member to Ken’s family. Later in Longmont Colorado they established their lifelong home.
Joan had many interesting jobs in her life from several secretarial positions to sales lady, even a Weigh Master for a concrete company. She loved her jobs and the people she came in contact with and they all liked and respected her as a wonderful person and employee. She was the partner in Graham Homes and served as the secretary for 55 years.
Joan starting sewing at an early age, being greatly influenced by her dear Mother who she loved ever so much. She had a rare talent for creating and sewing together many, many wonderful pieces and she lovingly gave them to her family year after year. She also took up countless cross stitching and beading projects. Again, she created many beautiful pieces that covered the walls of her home as well as those she shared them with. She belonged to Friends of Counted Cross Stitch where she met the most wonderful ladies and soon became dear friends to many of them. She lived for those meetings and special times with them.
Joan became a member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod after her marriage and loved her Savior and all the wonderful people she met in this congregation. After her health was failing she never missed watching Pastor John and the services provided online on her computer.
Joan loved her family and when told of the forth coming birth of her first Great grand daughter was overjoyed and immediately started a baby quilt and cross stitch picture. These will be finished and given in her name by her dear sister in law Patty and her dearest friend Sherry.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents Jack and Ila Cowell and her beloved Daughter Debbie. She is survived by her husband Ken of 62 years, her Son Douglas and wife Gina, her brothers Tom and Mike and wife Patty, Grandsons and Granddaughters Steven, Larisa, Jason, Tori. Also Sister in laws Judi Jackson, Dona Waldron and many Nephews and Nieces and cousins.
A viewing will be held at Howe Mortuary, 439 Coffman St., Longmont, Co. 80501 on Friday, April 12th, from 3 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church, 640 Alpine St. Longmont, Co. 80504 Saturday, April 13th at 11 a.m.; a viewing will be held one hour before services at 10 a.m. A luncheon will be provided by the church immediately following the funeral. Interment will be at Mountain View Cemetery, 620 11th Ave. Longmont, Co. 80501 on Monday, April 15th at 11 a.m.
