Jim was born April 28, 1947 in Cannon, North Carolina to Max E. and Eva Mae (Pethel) Carpenter. Jim was a 1965 graduate of Rock Hill High School in Rock Hill, South Carolina. He joined the Air Force shortly after graduation and served until 1968. Jim had been stationed in Denver and returned to attend HVAC technical training. He worked as a technician for Commercial Heating and Air Conditioning for 45 years, retiring in 2009.
He had served as a Deacon and Elder in various churches and was a part of prison ministry for 12 years. He also headed a 12-team nursing home ministry in various nursing homes in Denver until moving to Longmont.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Trent Carpenter.
Survivors include his wife Gale Carpenter, his son Mathew J. Carpenter and his wife Kristen and their children Kay and Emma. He is further survived by his brother Timothy Carpenter and his wife Delia of Rock Hill, SC and their sons Dylan and Clint; his sister Tracie King and her husband Ernest and their son Cody.
