Floyd Albert Oliver, age 91, of Longmont, died August 31, 2021. Born on April 30, 1930, in Greeley, Colorado, to Floyd and Lillie Oliver, he attended elementary and junior high school in Greeley, graduating from Greeley High School in 1949. Mr. Oliver then graduated from CSU with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1953 and became a commissioned officer in the United States Air Force. After training in Hawaii, he served two years in Okinawa.
Following the completion of his military duty, Floyd returned to Greeley and joined his father in business at Oliver Well Works. In 1960, he formed Colorado Pipe Lines, Inc., a construction company specializing in underground public utility work. Under his guidance, the company became the largest public utility construction company in Colorado during the 1970s. He was one of Weld County’s largest employers during these years.
Floyd was a caring and devoted family man. In 1952, he married Harriet Bain of Greeley. They had two children, Ellin and David. Harriet died of cancer on April 12, 1981. On June 7, 1986, he married Katharine Hamm Fenton, gaining three step children, Doug, Denise and Jennifer. Floyd was a wonderful father and stepfather and an involved and devoted grandfather. As a grandfather, he ate EZ bake cakes, tutored physics, taught grandchildren to ski, hiked many trails, built and loaded catapults for pumpkins, and was a spectator of countless ballet, sports, theater and musical events. Along with his wife Kathy, he took grandchildren on numerous vacations to learn about history, geography, culture and just to have good fun.
Mr. Oliver was a member of the Greeley Rotary Club, Colorado Utility Contractors Association, National Utility Contactors Association and was manager of the Colorado Well Drillers Association. He served on the Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra Board of Directors and the Aims Community College Advisory Board. In 1993, he became involved in land development, creating several subdivisions in Weld County, as well as creating the Tieman Village subdivision for the Greeley Area Habitat for Humanity. He also served on the Board of Directors for Greeley Area Habitat for Humanity.
For several decades, Floyd was a member of the Greeley First Congregational Church UCC, where he served in numerous roles, including Chairman of the Board of Trustees and Church Moderator. Following their move to Longmont in 1999, Floyd and Kathy became members of Allenspark Community Church, in the community where many joyful weekends were spent at the family’s cabin. Floyd enjoyed outdoor life such as fishing, skiing, hiking, motorcycle riding, mountain jeeping and sports. He traveled extensively and with great pleasure.
Survivors are his wife, Katharine Hamm Oliver of Longmont; two children Ellin Oliver Keene of Denver and David Oliver of Richmond, Virginia; step children Doug Fenton of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Denise Fenton of Seattle, Washington, and Jennifer Fenton of Longmont; his sister Pat Smith of San Diego, California; and seven grandchildren: Eddie, Elizabeth, Megan, Chris, Allan, Scott and Rebecca; and one great grandchild.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, September 10, at Ahlberg Funeral Home at 326 Terry Street, in Longmont. The service will be followed immediately by a reception at the Callahan House at 312 Terry Street.
