Dick was born March 9, 1930 in Walsenburg, Colorado to Ellsworth and Zerelda (Farr) Richards. He spent his early years in Walsenburg, before moving to Denver, where he graduated from South High School in 1948. He married Madelyn Pritchard, his high school sweetheart, on May 26, 1950. Dick served in the Army during the Korean War, and was stationed in Tokyo, where he worked in the business office on the base. He attended Regis University on the GI Bill, and graduated with a degree in Business, with an emphasis in Finance and Accounting. After graduating, Dick and his family moved to Ogallala, Nebraska where he started his finance career. He spent several years working in corporate America, and moved to Longmont in 1976 when he was working for Head Ski in Boulder. Dick established his own financial consulting and tax practice in Longmont in 1990. He retired from that practice in 2019.
Dick was very active in the community, and was a member of St. Stephens Church and Longmont Rotary Club. He was on the Vestry at St. Stephens, and was also Sr. Warden for several years. He worked with the Rotary youth exchange program, and was very active with the Open World program, which provides education in free trade and democracy to delegates from Russia and the Ukraine. He was also a Paul Harris Fellow through Rotary. He was also in involved with the Junior Achievement program and enjoyed doing community projects that contributed to developing high school age youth.
He is survived by his wife Madelyn, daughters Belinda Cordova and Danna Richards, grandchildren Alyssa (Travis) Stanley, Brandon (Crystal) Cordova, Dustin Cordova, and great-grandchildren Raegan, Payten, Madesyn, and Austin Stanley. Dick was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Lori Richards, his brother Larry Richards, and his son-in-law Ken Cordova.
A Memorial Service for Dick will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, December 16, 2022 at St. Stephens Episcopal Church 1303 S. Bross Ln. Longmont, CO 80501. In lieu of flowers, donations in Dick's name can be made to Rotary International Open World or Youth Exchange programs.
