Darlene Bradford Nix, 84, of Longmont, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on January 12, 2023. She was born on May 11, 1938 in Longmont to Shirrell “Brad” F. and Sylvia L. (Weese) Bradford.
Darlene was a member of a pioneer family which homesteaded the Lyons and Hygiene areas now known as Rabbit Mountain and McCall Lake. Hailing from Illinois, her great-grandfather, Columbus Weese, arrived in 1859 looking for gold with his uncle, William Baker. Darlene loved the history of her community and was very proud of her 3rd generation Boulder County roots. Her family was the most important part of her life – closely followed by her pristine coffee table.
Her unwavering faith in God was born from her grandmother, Lulu Bradford, who preached on the sidewalk at 3rd and Main of Longmont in the late 1800s. Darlene was raised in the Free Methodist Church and later became a long-time member of New Creation Church.
As a young mother, Darlene worked in Denver operating a keypunch machine to support her family. She later worked at dental offices, the Daily Times Call, Longmont Scene Newspaper, CARE International, and lastly at Nixcavating with her son, Scott.
She greatly enjoyed visiting Rocky Mountain National Park every fall with her good friend Carol, and they took and shared hundreds of pictures over the years. Her mother instilled a love for playing cards which continued up until the end, and Darlene had at least two card groups going at a time. Darlene was a gifted artist, an avid reader, and a loving mother and grandmother. Her friends and family kept a spring in her step and a smile on her lips.
Darlene married Dean Getman and had a son, Scott, and a daughter, Danean. They divorced and later married John Nix and had her youngest daughter, Jaci.
Darlene is survived by her son, Scott (Sharon) Nix of Longmont, and her daughters, Danean (Dennis) Ogden of Niwot, and Jaci (Jason) Duckworth of Denver. Her seven grandchildren are Sara (Zach) Kincaid, Brady (Kim) Nix, Daidre Ogden, Danna Ogden, Kyle (Jessica) Crist, Erik (Sami) Crist, and Josh (Allyson) Crist. Her three step-grandchildren are Danny (Addy) Vick, James Duckworth, and Josh (Sadee) Duckworth. She leaves behind five great-grandchildren along with numerous friends, cousins, nieces, and nephews. Darlene was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Boyd and Jerry Bradford.
A “Celebration of Life with Jesus” will be held on Saturday afternoon, May 13, 2023 at the Hygiene Church at 7891 Hygiene Road, in Hygiene. Cremation is entrusted to Dignity Memorial at Howe Mortuary & Cremation Services.
