Dan was born on March 2, 1931 to Jacob A. Bauer and Katherine Elizabeth Schneider Bauer in Ft. Morgan, Colorado. He was raised in Ft. Morgan where he graduated from high school. He joined the U.S. Air Force where he served for four years. He was stationed in San Antonio for one year where he met Mary Dell. They were married six weeks later to prepare for his transfer to Suitland Hall in Maryland. He was assigned a job working on codes which required a Top Security clearance. He was discharged in 1955 and returned to Colorado with Mary Dell, Dan Jr. and baby daughter Elizabeth (Beth).
Dan married Mary Dell Cockrill on September 7, 1952 in Chapman Ranch, Texas. They moved to Longmont shortly thereafter where he worked at a couple of jobs before he began a career with Mountain Bell Telephone Co. He remained with them for over thirty years until his retirement from U.S. West Telephone Company on April 7, 1986.
Dan was a mild mannered, quiet man who always had a nice warm smile. Dan had many hobbies and activities; he loved to play golf and to smoke his pipe. He played guitar and had a wonderful voice. He sang with the Civic Opera Association in San Antonio, the Men’s Chorus in Virginia, the Longs Peak Barbershoppers and the Choralaires in Longmont. Both he and Mary Dell sang in the Methodist Church Choir. They loved going to Vail and Central City together. He played football, baseball and was a Fast Pitch softball pitcher in the military and for over twenty years after. He was also a member of the Telephone Pioneers and Hix n Chix Square Dancers.
Preceding him in death are his wife; two brothers Jacob Bauer and Hank Bauer; and sisters Rose Buffington and Marie Bauer.
Surviving are his children; Daniel (Gloria) Bauer, Jr. of Houston; Beth (Perry) Ramsey of Erie; Tom Bauer of Johnstown; and Richard (Erin) Bauer of Martinez, California; and one grandson Spencer Bauer of Yuma, AZ. He will be dearly missed.
A cremation has been entrusted to the Howe Mortuary, Longmont.
Services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 15 at the Howe Mortuary Chapel. Interment will follow at the Ft. Logan National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made in Dan’s name to the American Cancer Society.
