Anne Obenour Babcock of Longmont, Colorado passed away at the Peaks Care Center in Longmont on April 4, 2009. She was 79 years old.Anne Babcock was born Dorothy Anne Obenour on November 13, 1929 in Port Angeles, Washington to Dr. Sterling Wallace Obenour, Sr., M.D., and Dorothy Lillian (Duvall) Obenour. She graduated from Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Arts in English and certification in Medical Technology. She worked as a Medical Technologist at several hospitals and New Mexico State Laboratories; performed medical research at the Veterans Hospital in San Francisco, and taught. She had a strong artistic bent, learning a new skill every few years. These included sewing matching outfits for her young children, raising canaries, macramé, oil painting, silver sand casting and jewelry work, and drawing. Music often filled Anne's home as she loved playing the piano.Rock collecting was a long-time hobby; she traveled all over the United States to dig for quartz, emeralds, geodes and more until she'd developed an outstanding gem and mineral collection. Anne loved to hunt for shells during long walks on the beach and find hidden treasures at flea markets and thrift stores. Certified in Red Cross First Aid, Anne taught many classes. As the children entered high school she spent a few years raising a large garden and a few chickens. Late in life she took to the road in an RV with her dog traveling the US wherever she pleased. She was quite proud of the accomplishments of her children. We hope she realized how much she gave us: travel, adventures at beaches and mines, exposure to so many arts, the example of lifetime learning, and, always, her love. She is survived by her son, J.D. Sterling Babcock, Ph.D. and his wife, Marcia Babcock, Ph.D., of Longmont; two daughters: Jean Brielle Babcock, Ph.D. of Wichita, Kansas, and Bethany Babcock Richard; Bethany's husband, Col. Dana Richard, USAF, of Nokesville, Virginia; and three grandchildren, Alexander Eugene Richard, Athena Renata Richard, and Abraham Dartagnan Richard. Anne is further survived by a brother, Sterling Wallace ""Obie"" Obenour, Jr., M.D. and his wife, Mary, of Zanesville, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Patricia Obenour of Akron, Ohio; and her ex-husband Daniel L. Babcock, Ph.D. of Rolla, Missouri. Her parents and a brother, Malcolm Obenour, Esq., preceded her in death. The family would like to thank The Peaks Care Center and Halcyon Hospice for their loving care of Anne.Arrangements have been entrusted to Howe Mortuary and Cremation Services of Longmont, Colorado.
