He was born on March 4, 1918 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the son of Arthur and Eleanora Kirchhoff. Robert attended Berlin High School, and upon graduation, joined the Navy. He was sent to San Diego for training, and would eventually find his way to Long Beach, California, where he met Inez Burney, or Peggy as the family in Wisconsin knew her.
Upon discharge from the Navy in 1940, he married Peggy in Milwaukee, where the two lived and Bob worked for Stolper steel. They soon moved down to Homewood, Illinois where Bob worked for Cardox.
After Pearl Harbor, Bob received a draft notice for the Army. He decided to join the Army Air Corps, where he became a pilot of B-24s. In February of 1945, he was sent to a tiny island called Anguar, in the Palau Island group in the south Pacific. He would later be sent to Okinawa, where he flew combat missions to Japan.
After his discharge from the Army Air Corps in January of 1946, he and Peggy lived in Long Beach, where their daughter Noreen was born.
Bob got a job with IBM, where he worked for thirty-three years. Upon retirement, he moved to Leisure World in Seal Beach, California, where he lived for the rest of his life.
During this time in Seal Beach, he married Edna Coffey.
He is survived by his daughter, Noreen Kirchhoff, of Seal Beach, California, brother, Richard (Geraldine) Kirchhoff of Fond du Lac, sister, Jean (Gilbert) Keller of Oshkosh, grandson, Robert, and also numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services with the Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday February 11, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at the All Saints Catholic Church of Berlin with the Rev. Jerome Maksvytis officiating and burial with full military honors provided by the Berlin V.F.W. will follow in the Oakwood Cemetery of Berlin.
Immediately following the services at the cemetery all are invited to the Berlin V.F.W. hall for a luncheon and fellowship with the family.
Relatives and friends may visit with the family on Saturday only from 9 to 10 a.m. at the Wiecki-Skipchak Funeral Home of Berlin, before we leave for the services at the church.
