Passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 15, 2023 at the age of 78. John Burton (Burt) Dowsett was born to the late Percival and Cora Dowsett at their farmhouse in Crosby, Ontario and educated at Western University. Burt is survived by his wife Kathy and his daughters Julie Dowsett (Andrew Hryhorowych) and Heather Dowsett and predeceased by his sister Anne Maxwell. He will be greatly missed by his niece Jennifer Maxwell (Michael Thorp), his grandchild and namesake Luke Burton Hryhorowych-Dowsett, and so many other family members, friends, and colleagues. Burt had a long and storied career as a journalist at the London Free Press, covering everything from sports to the outdoors to food to the editorials. He also wrote freelance for a variety of books and magazines. He had diverse interests and talents, including flying, curling, sailing, music, politics, and environmentalism. Burt was known for his kindness, sense of humour and talent for storytelling. Nothing made him happier than spending time with his family at the cottage and cheering on his beloved Western Mustangs football team. There will be a memorial visitation on Saturday, March 25, 2023 at Needham Funeral Service (520 Dundas Street, London) from 2-4 pm with the sharing of memories and stories at 2:45 pm.
