"Tense, Touch and Terrific", as she always playfully described herself, Hilda Eileen "Warrior Maiden" Allen (nee Larter) was a passionate advocate for animals all her life. She was kind, artistic, empathetic and generous to a fault as she spent her life aiming to help her neighbors, workmates, friends, family and a host of wild and stray animals. Hilda lived her life with passions. She loved to dance, paint and create masks in clay. She had a cheeky sense of humor. Hilda approached life courageously, always making the best of even the most difficult situation, right up until the end of her life.
Hilda was born to Albert and Renee Larter in 1929. She and her brother Billy grew up in London, England. Hilda married George Edward Allen in 1949. They had one daughter, Lesley, for whom they shared a deep love. Hilda and George enjoyed nature, gardening and taking care of many cats who seemed to adopt them over the years.
In 1987, the couple emigrated to Canada to live closer to Lesley, her husband Norman Burdis and their granddaughter Zillah Moss. Hilda and George later became proud loving great grandparents to Cordelia and Phebe Palmer.
Hilda will be so missed by her family, a trio of dogs and a host of wild animals and birds.
A private cremation will occur through Needham Funeral Service, and a celebration of Hilda's rich life will occur on Saturday June 29 for close family and friends who wish to raise a glass to Hilda. If Hilda has touched your life in some way, and we have missed passing along these details to you, please do not hesitate to be in touch with Hilda's family. We wish to thank the incredibly compassionate and kind team on the 3rd floor of St. Mary's at the Mound Hope Centre for Long Term Care. They treated her with dignity, fun, and kindness that she deserved. In lieu of flowers, Hilda would have most appreciated either a small donation to an animal charity of your choice or a kind gesture to an animal in need.
